Mixed Bag is the 1966 debut album by Richie Havens. Although it was Havens' first album release, Douglas Records later issued two unauthorized albums of material that had been recorded prior to the Mixed Bag recording sessions—Electric Havens (1968) and Richie Havens' Record (1969). Mixed Bag was released after Havens signed on with manager Albert Grossman and was released on Verve Folkways, a new folk music imprint of Verve Records.[7]

Mixed Bag is frequently cited as the singer's best work,[1] and was his first album to appear on Billboard's charts (appearing on both the jazz and pop charts). The recording was the first to introduce a wider audience to Havens's rich baritone vocals and the full-sound of Havens's distinct guitar style (thumb-chorded and played in open E tuning).[1]Electric Havens and Mixed Bag were two of the records reported among the personal collection of Havens' one-time Greenwich Village buddy, Jimi Hendrix.[8]

Introduction

Before I get into the song I would like to give my gratitude to anybody who is reading this, this is my very first post on my very first blog and I hope that what you read on here can inspire you and make you think. Also, since this is my very first post I think it is important that I give a quick introduction to this blog, but I’m sure most of you can already assume what this blog will be about based on the name “lyricsreviews”. However, in addition to lyrics I plan on writing about things that are relevant to myself or the world, whether it be film, politics, or current events. But the bulk of what you will read on this site is lyrics of songs that I consider to be some of the greatest of all time. Keep in mind that these are all subjective as all art is, and I encourage anyone with any opinions on the song to share them in the comments.

The Song

The first song lyrics I chose to do an analysis on was the song “Follow” written by Jerry Merrick; Although if you have heard the song you would have likely heard it from Richie Havens who popularized it on his 1967 album Mixed Bag. This is a song that everyone needs to listen to. Whether it be the Richie Havens version or the Jerry Merrick version the lyrics are really what sets this song apart. Just by reading the lyrics the words jump out at you as if they are dying to be read.

To me this song is all about following your dreams and not listening to the expectations that society has put in place for you. The first lyrics of the song begin to establish this idea, they say, “Let the river rock you like a cradle. Climb to the treetops, child, if you’re able”. This first line also gives me the idea that this is a Mother/Father speaking to his or her child and wanting better for them. Perhaps the parent gave up on their childhood dream and they don’t want the child to make the same mistake and to instead, “close your fingertips and fly where I can’t hold you”, meaning it’s okay to go to great limits and great distances in order to do what is important to you.

Moreover, I think this song is letting you know that the journey you will take in order to pursue your dream will not be easy. Merrick writes, “And the song that I am singing may disturb or serve to quell you.” Along the way things are going to get tough. You may stay up at night and consider this dream of yours and how insane it may seem and it is okay to think like that. Dreams take courage and sacrifice. In order to succeed in your dreams you need to go after it with so much passion and determination that the people around you may start to question your sanity. It is scary but I can feel this song trying to put people at ease who might be frightened to try and go after their dream.

More than anything I think this song is begging each and every one of us not to take our lives for granted. The song says, “Let your flower perfume out and let the wind caress you.” We need to enjoy this time that we have here on this earth, even if it just throwing up our arms and letting the wind soothe our body. And I think that is what the song is really trying to get at. We need to follow our own ambitions even if it may be scary or difficult, but we also must enjoy the journey. Enjoy the simple pleasures of life, tell your loved ones how much you love them, and if you have a dream go and chase it.

If you have any other opinions about this song please leave a comment. What makes music so special is that a song is able to be interpreted in many different ways. But no matter the interpretation the feelings that are generated from a great song are something that all of us can relate to.
