Ultimate Boot CD is completely free for the download, or could be obtained for a small fee. If you had somehow paid a ridiculous amount of money for it, you have most likely been fleeced. The least you could do is to make as many copies of the offical UBCD and pass it to your friends, relatives, colleagues or even complete strangers to minimize the per unit cost of your loss!
Please note that some of the freeware on UBCD explicitly prohibits redistribution for commercial purposes eg. DIMM_ID. If you intend to resell UBCD for commercial gains, please contact the respective authors for their permissions.
If you like trying out new stuff, please check out an early beta version of UBCD Live and give us your feedback. This is a Live Rescue CD based on Debian, which we hope will eventually be good enough to replace Parted Magic.
You need the Ultimate Boot CD if you want to:
- Run floppy-based diagnostic tools from CDROM drives. More and more PCs are shipped without floppy drives these days, and it is such a royal pain when you need to run diagnostic tools on them.
- Free yourself from the slow loading speed of the floppy drive. Even if you do have a floppy drive, it is still much much faster to run your diagnostic tools from the CDROM drive, rather than wait for the tool to load from the floppy drive.
- Consolidate as many diagnostic tools as possible into one bootable CD. Wouldn't you like to avoid digging into the dusty box to look for the right floppy disk, but simply run them all from a single CD? Then the Ultimate Boot CD is for you!
- Run Ultimate Boot CD from your USB memory stick. A script on the CD prepares your USB memory stick so that it can be used on newer machines that supports booting from USB devices. You can access the same tools as you would from the CD version.
New features in UBCD V5.x include:
- New! The Linux-based distro Parted Magic is now included with UBCD V5.0. This should be the method of choice when you need to resize/rescue partitions, access NTFS filesystems or work with USB storage devices.
- New! UBCD V5.x now supports both syslinux/isolinux and grub4dos. This helps improve the chances that UBCD will boot on any particular machine.
When you boot up from the CD, a text-based menu will be displayed, and you will be able to select the tool you want to run. The selected tool actually boots off a virtual floppy disk created in memory.

| AOSS | What is PC Tools' Alternate Operating System Scanner? Once a system is infected with malware it becomes difficult to remove that malware as it is already embedded in the system and has control over many components which are key to the system's operations. Malware, like rootkits, use system components to hide themselves and prevent other software from detecting or removing them. This is often the case of who gets there first; if the malware is able to get control of the system earlier on then it also has control over any software that may be run later. Besides just hiding, malware can also block the execution of other security applications. If you cannot install or run a security application in the first place then you cannot scan and detect the malware. The best time to remove this malware is when it is not running, but malware often starts with the Operating System, so we would have to stop the Operating System to stop the malware. On a shutdown OS nothing is running and malware like rootkits cannot hide themselves and so it would be easy to find and remove them. But how do you run a security program like Spyware Doctor on a system that is not running? You run the security application on an Alternate Operating System which has access to the files and registry of the sleeping Operating System. Its like putting the Operating System under a general anaesthesia. The Alternate Operating System Scanner (AOSS) can now scan through all the files on the sleeping OS unobscured by any other applications or malware. AOSS functions by loading up an Alternate mini Operating System which runs the scanners, which in turn read data from the Spyware Doctor signature database. The scanners scan the files and registry entries of the sleeping OS and use Spyware Doctor signatures to identify malicious entries. The user is then given the option to remove these entries. Without the malware running, AOSS can easily find and remove any malware, even the most sophisticated rootkit. |

SP3 - link to MS site to download SP3 if you would like to slipstream your XP CD with SP3. While I personally still recommend SP2, there have been no problems found when building with SP3. If problems are/were found, we would figure out fixes for you!!
AutoStreamer (Version 1.0.33)- Awesome application for slipstreaming Service Packs onto your Windows installations CD's!! It was created for this project and includes features that will help everyone. It is compatiable with 2k, XP, and 2k3!!
Repair/Recovery CD Tools
XP-ISO-Builder is an excellent tool that may be able to help you if you are one of the unfortunate people that do not have a 'true' XP CD. If you have a repair or recovery CD, this software may be able to help you create an XP CD that you can use to create UBCD4Win.
Driver Tools
Having problems getting drivers for your build? WinDriversBackup may be the tool that can help you get your driver files from your current system into your UBCD4Win build. This tool creates a backup of any driver installed on your system. You should be able to include that backup in the 'drivers' folder of the project so your device(s) will be recognized. This software is no longer freeware.
CD Burning Tools
CD Burner Pro XP - link to site for an excellent freeware CD burning application. More instructions are on the 'How to Build' page of this site.
Virtual Machine Software
QEMU for Windows - link to the site for a cool tool that allows you to run ISO images from your HDD in a separate window. I used this to troubleshoot problems with the UBCD4Win without having to waste CD's. It offers many other options.
VMWare Player - run, share and evaluate pre-built applications and beta software in virtual machines.
MS Virtual PC 2007 -FREE! I have used the free trial a few times over the past several years and now it's free. This is excellent virtual PC software!
MD5 Hash Tools
MD5Summer - link to the download page. MD5summer is an application for Microsoft Windows 9x, NT, ME, 2000 and XP which generates and verifies md5 checksums. Used to verify that you have received an unchanged download of this project or any other download that provides the checksum for their download.
Windows 7 Iso File Download Free
HashOnClick - link to the 2BrightSparks freeware programs page. HashOnClick is a very easy to use, when installed the program is implemented as a shell extension. So you can right-click and calculate the hash value for a file.

CD Mounting Tools
VirtualCDControlPanel - Small and free tool from Microsoft for mounting ISO images. Very useful tool for testing ISO images without having to burn them to a disc. Please read the documentation provided in the download for instructions on it's use.
